Illinois Window Tint Law

Illinois regulates window tint under 625 ILCS 5/12-503. Unlike most states, Illinois offers a unique paired option system for passenger vehicles — you choose between two front/rear VLT combinations. SUVs and vans follow a simpler set of rules.

Understanding Illinois' Paired Option System

Illinois is unique among states in its tint law structure. For passenger vehicles (sedans, coupes, hatchbacks), you must choose either Option A or Option B — you cannot mix and match between them.

Option A gives you lighter front windows (50% VLT) but allows darker rear windows (30% VLT). Option B gives you a uniform look with 35% VLT all around. Most customers who want the darkest legal front tint choose Option B.

What Does VLT Mean?

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission — it measures the percentage of visible light that passes through your window and film combined. A 35% VLT window allows 35% of outside light in and blocks 65%.

Illinois allows a ±5% tolerance on all VLT measurements — more generous than neighboring states. This means a 35% VLT window could read anywhere from 30% to 40% and still pass. At Classic Shades, we always aim for the safe side of the tolerance to keep you compliant.

Reflectivity & Mirror Requirements

Reflective / Metallic Films
Not Allowed
Non-reflective only
If Rear Is Tinted
Dual Side Mirrors
Required by law

Illinois prohibits all reflective and metallic window films. Only non-reflective films are legal. Additionally, if your rear windshield is tinted, your vehicle must have dual side mirrors. Most modern vehicles already meet this requirement.

All Autobahn ceramic films installed by Classic Shades are non-reflective and fully compliant with Illinois law.

Medical Exemptions

Illinois allows medical exemptions, but only for specific conditions:

  • Lupus
  • Disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis
  • Light sensitivity resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Albinism

Requirements: Certification from an Illinois-licensed physician. Must be renewed every 4 years. Must be carried in the vehicle at all times. Conditions manageable with sunglasses do not qualify.

If you believe you qualify, consult your physician first. Classic Shades can install exempt-level tint once you have proper documentation.

Penalties for Illegal Tint

Illinois enforces tint violations with increasing severity for repeat offenders:

First Violation

Petty offense

$50 – $500
Subsequent Violations

Class C misdemeanor

$100 – $500
+ mandatory tint removal

Mandatory tint removal on subsequent violations means you pay the fine and lose the film you already paid for. Getting it right the first time is always the smarter investment.

What Classic Shades Recommends

With over 37 years of experience and thousands of installations for Illinois drivers, here's what we recommend:

For Sedans — Option B (Most Popular)

35% VLT all around gives you the darkest legal front windows and a uniform look. This is the most popular choice among our Illinois sedan customers.

For Sedans — Option A

50% VLT on the front with 30% VLT on the rear. Choose this if you want the darkest legal rear tint and don't mind a lighter front. Great for maximizing rear privacy.

For SUVs & Vans

50% VLT on the front side windows with 15% or darker on the rear. Illinois allows any darkness on the rear for SUVs and vans, so you can go as dark as you'd like for maximum privacy and UV protection.

Our Film of Choice

We install Autobahn ceramic film — it blocks up to 99% of UV rays and rejects more heat than dyed films, all while being completely non-reflective as Illinois requires. Every install comes with a lifetime warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the two tint options for sedans in Illinois?

Illinois is unique in offering two paired VLT options for passenger vehicles. Option A allows 50% VLT on front side windows with 30% VLT on rear side and rear windshield. Option B allows 35% VLT on front side windows with 35% VLT on rear side and rear windshield. You must choose one option — you cannot mix and match between them.

What are the tint limits for SUVs and vans in Illinois?

SUVs and vans in Illinois must have at least 50% VLT on front side windows, but can have any darkness on rear side and rear windshield windows. If the rear windows are tinted, dual side mirrors are required.

Does Illinois allow reflective or mirrored tint?

No. Illinois law prohibits reflective or metallic window films entirely. Only non-reflective films are allowed. All Autobahn ceramic films installed by Classic Shades are non-reflective and fully compliant with Illinois law.

Can I get a medical exemption for darker tint in Illinois?

Yes, but only for specific conditions: lupus, disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis, light sensitivity from traumatic brain injury, and albinism. You must have certification from an Illinois-licensed physician, it must be renewed every 4 years, and the certification must be carried in the vehicle. Conditions manageable with sunglasses do not qualify.

What are the penalties for illegal window tint in Illinois?

A first violation in Illinois is a petty offense with a $50 to $500 fine. Subsequent violations are a Class C misdemeanor carrying $100 to $500 in fines plus mandatory tint removal. Getting legal tint from the start is far cheaper than repeated fines and removal costs.
