Indiana Window Tint Laws: What You Need to Know

Understanding Indiana's window tint laws is essential before getting your vehicle's windows tinted. Indiana has specific regulations about how dark your window tint can be, and the rules differ for front and rear windows.

Indiana Window Tint Regulations

Indiana Code IC 9-19-19 governs window tinting for vehicles registered in the state. Here are the key requirements:

Front Side Windows: Must allow at least 30% of visible light to pass through (30% VLT). This means the tint can block up to 70% of light.

Rear Side Windows: No restriction on darkness. You can go as dark as you want on the rear passenger windows.

Rear Windshield: No restriction on darkness, as long as the vehicle has side mirrors on both sides.

Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 5 inches of the windshield, or above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.

Reflectivity: Indiana does not allow mirrored or metallic tint that is more than 25% reflective on any window.

What Happens If You Violate Indiana Tint Laws?

Driving with illegal window tint in Indiana is a Class C infraction. You may be pulled over and issued a fix-it ticket requiring you to remove or replace the tint within a specified timeframe.

Medical Exemptions

Indiana does allow medical exemptions for window tint that exceeds the legal limits. You must carry documentation from a licensed physician in the vehicle at all times.

Our Recommendation

At Classic Shades, we default to 30% VLT on front windows to ensure Indiana compliance. For rear windows, most customers choose between 20% and 5% depending on their preference for privacy and darkness. Our team will walk you through all the options during your appointment.

Kentucky Window Tint Laws

For customers across the river in Kentucky, the laws are slightly different. Kentucky requires front side windows to allow at least 35% VLT, and rear windows must allow at least 18% VLT.
